In 2004, the Port and BCDC completed a joint public planning process which, similar to the Special Area Plan amendments for Pier 35 to China Basin, focused on defining public access and shoreline improvements to stimulate economic revitalization within Fisherman's Wharf. The scope of this study included transportation and pedestrian improvements to rationalize parking, clarifying access to the Wharf and create a more pleasing pedestrian experience, and amendments to BCDC policies necessary to stimulate reinvestment and repairs of existing facilities. Like other waterfront planning projects, the Fisherman's Wharf planning process has enjoyed a high level of public participation. A detailed review of the planning recommendations was published in a report issued in July 2004. Many of these recommendations require further review and action by other City agencies.
